Grimoires, Witchcraft & Ceremonial Magic

The Picatrix (Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm)

A single-volume treatment of astral magic in the Hermetic-Arabic tradition: the celestial hierarchy, the making and consecration of talismans, the properties and images of the planets and zodiac signs, and the prayers and rites used to attract their powers. Organized, like the historical work it draws its name and subject from, into four books.

Prologue: The Gate of the Wise

1This is the work of the sage, compiled from the wisdom of two hundred books to reveal the hidden paths of celestial magic. It is not for the foolish, for the secrets contained herein, if misused, could bring ruin to the world. The philosophers of old hid their knowledge in symbols and riddles, but they left paths by which the wise might attain understanding. This book is a key to those paths, meant only for those who would use its power for good and in devotion to the One True Source.

2The work is divided into four parts. The first discusses the nature of the heavens and their images. The second discusses the motion of the spheres and their effects upon the earth. The third teaches the properties of the planets and how to commune with their spirits. The fourth treats the powers of those spirits and the rituals needed to draw them down.

Book One: The Foundation of Magic, Ch. 1: On Knowing Your Place in the Cosmos

1True knowledge is the noblest gift. Through it, one understands the causes of all things and the Great Chain of Being—from the First Principle, down through Intellect, Spirit, and Matter, to the humblest creation. The One is perfect and all receives truth from Him. To study His creation is to serve Him.

Book One: The Foundation of Magic, Ch. 2: The Nature of Magic

1Magic is the art of producing wonders by engaging the spirit and the senses. Talismans are "force-bearers," crafted from appropriate materials, at astrologically correct times, and consecrated to draw down planetary powers. This works by similitude: the material, form, and timing of a talisman must align with the celestial influence you wish to attract. Words, too, hold power, as they can unite or divide spirits.

2Magic is both Theoretical (the knowledge of the stars) and Practical (the application of that knowledge through ritual). True mastery is impossible without a deep understanding of astrology—the motions of the planets, the natures of the signs, and the system of degrees.

Book One: The Foundation of Magic, Ch. 3: The Substance of the Heavens

1The heavens are a perfect, spherical whole. The stars cast rays upon the earth, and through these rays, celestial influences enter the material world. All heat, motion, and generation in the sublunary realm ultimately stem from the heavens.

Book One: The Foundation of Magic, Ch. 4: The Foundations of Talismanic Practice

1The key to all talismanic work is the Moon. Its position and aspects govern the success or failure of any operation.

2For good works (love, healing, prosperity), ensure the Moon is free from the malefic influences of Saturn and Mars and not combust by the Sun. For evil works (destruction, enmity), ensure the Moon is afflicted or in evil aspect.

Book One: The Foundation of Magic, Ch. 5: Examples and Requirements for Talismans

1The crafting of a talisman requires precise astrological conditions. Here are examples of image operations:

2Image for Love: Create two figures in the likeness of the individuals. Make them in the hour of Jupiter or Venus, with the Head of the Dragon ascending, and the Moon making a good aspect to Venus. Join the images in an embrace and bury them. For lasting love, write the amicable numbers "220" and "284" on the figures before joining them.

3Image for Enmity: Make an image in the form of your enemy in the hour of Mars, with the Moon in Scorpio. Make the ascendant unfortunate and place an infortune in aspect with the lord of the ascendant. Bury the image upside down outside the city.

4Image for Prosperity: Make an image with the ascendant, tenth house, their lords, the Moon, and the second house fortunate. Place the Part of Fortune in a good position. Guard the image and keep it secret.

5Image for Healing: Craft an image of a lion in pure gold, with the Sun in the first degree of the second face of Leo. Whoever carries this will be cured of kidney stones.

6Image for Summoning: Write a specific seven-line name (containing words like zaare, fegem bohorim, etc.) on a tablet. Wash the tablet and give the water to a sick person for healing.

7Key Aphorisms:

8· A ritual's effect is strengthened by similarity.

9· Firm belief unites the spirit to the celestial powers.

10· Words are the spirit of the image.

11· Suffumigation and prayer are essential.

12· Knowledge is the ladder to this art.

13Principle of Astrological Timing: The power of a planet is amplified when it is placed in its own exaltation or ruling house. The magician must know the signs of direct and torturous ascent, the nature of the aspects (trine, sextile, square, opposition), and the nature of the planets (fortunate and unfortunate).

Book One: The Foundation of Magic, Ch. 6 & 7: The Macrocosm and the Microcosm

1Humanity is the microcosm, a reflection of the macrocosm. The universe is a ladder of being: God, Intellect, Spirit, Matter, the Primum Mobile, the Fixed Stars, the Planets, the Elements, and then down through minerals, plants, animals, and finally humans, the rational being. The human body is a small representation of the entire cosmos. To practice magic, the sage must be pure and free from worldly attachments.

Book Two: The Heavens' Figures and Their Effects, Ch. 1: The Path of Learning

1The foundation of magic is the motion of the planets. To succeed in this science, one must master the quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy) and the natural sciences, as well as metaphysics. A perfect philosopher is the only true magician.

Book Two: The Heavens' Figures and Their Effects, Ch. 2: The Images of Heaven

1The heavens contain images, both as constellations and as specific figures within the decans. The total number of aspects and conjunctions (10,080) all have power in the world. This knowledge is to be guarded carefully.

Book Two: The Heavens' Figures and Their Effects, Ch. 3: The Works of the Planets

1The Moon's five phases in relation to the Sun dictate different types of influence:

21. Separation to First Square: Augments humidity (affects plants).

32. First Square to Opposition: Augments heat and humidity.

43. Opposition to Second Square: Augments heat (affects animals/minerals).

54. Second Square to Conjunction: Dry and cold.

65. Conjunction: The Moon is at its most powerful.

7The Lord of the Ascendant must be free from malefics and in a good position. The Moon is the mediatrix of all planetary influences. For good works, she must be waxing; for harmful works, waning.

Book Two: The Heavens' Figures and Their Effects, Ch. 4 & 5: The Motion of the Eighth Sphere and National Divisions

1The theory of trepidation (the 640-year cycle of an 8-degree arc) changes the figures of heaven and is a great secret. Magic is divided among nations: the Chaldeans excel at magic itself; the Greeks excel at the astrological science; the Indians excel at the power of words, spirits, and visions. The "Perfect Nature" is the spirit of the philosopher, a guide to unlocking secret knowledge.

Book Two: The Heavens' Figures and Their Effects, Ch. 6 & 7: The Power of Images & Dialectic

1Magical images work by virtue and similitude. A successful talisman is a composite object, built of materials sympathetic to the desired planet, and reflects the celestial influences. Quantity (line, surface, body, time, place) and quality are essential to magical work.

2Dialectic is necessary in magical work because it requires understanding similarity and difference. The coadunation of similarities is the greatest foundation of magical effects.

Book Two: The Heavens' Figures and Their Effects, Ch. 8 & 9: The Order of Nature & Examples

1Nature is composed of four primary qualities: heat, cold, moisture, and dryness. These combine to form the elements and, eventually, all composite things.

2Examples of Apotropaic Figures:

3· To repel mice: Figure of a fixed star in Leo (with specific astrological signs).

4· To repel gnats: Figure made with the second face of Taurus rising.

5· To repel flies: Figure made with the third face of Scorpio rising.

6· To call someone: Figure of Venus with Taurus rising, whose name is burned.

7· To cause enmity: Figure of Saturn in Capricorn (made with a black dog's tooth).

8· To curse a place: Figure of Saturn in Capricorn (made with a pig's brain).

Book Three: The Properties of the Planets and Signs, Ch. 12: The Necessary Rules

1The successful operator must have faith and love for God. Desire and faith attract the spirit and move it towards its effects. The work must never be revealed to the foolish. Nature is defined as the beginning and end of motion and rest.

Book Four: The Spirits and Their Powers, Ch. 1: The Strength and Power of the Spirits

1All things are arranged in five degrees: Prime Matter and First Form, Sense Perception/Mind, Spirit, Nature, and the Elements. The spirit is a subordinate circle that receives from the upper heavens and pours down to the lower. The spiritual is good, and the material is its vessel. Matter is twofold: Spiritual (the higher realm) and Corporeal (the lower realm). The sage should strive to ascend in spirit, distinguishing himself from beasts.

Book Four: The Spirits and Their Powers, Ch. 2: Attracting the Moon's Power

1Rituals for the Moon in Each Sign (Detailed):

2· In Aries (Visions): Go to a green, boggy place near running water. Cut off a cock's crest, decapitate it with bone (not iron). Place two iron censers with incense. Say the Moon's prayer. A handsome man will appear; ask your request.

3· In Taurus (Revelation): Dress in linen dyed with dyer's weed. Boil nut wood. Wash your hands, arms, face, and feet. Use a new carpet and a green linen cloth. Jump onto the carpet and say: "ribharim ribharim caypharim caypharim dyaforim dyaforim" twenty times. Sacrifice the cock. A man will appear. A friend who performed this was led to a treasure.

4· In Gemini (Vision): Go to an elevated, windy place. Use a yellow tin pipe and censer. Burn storax gum. Make a circle with the pipe. A man will appear.

5· In Cancer (Binding): Go to an elevated plain. Listen in all directions with a turtledove. Decapitate it, burn its beak. Take four feathers from each wing, mix with colocynth and storax gum. Mix with ash of the sacrifice and birthwort sap. Make an image of a man riding a lion. Burn the suffumigation and say the Moon's prayer. Make a circle, place the image inside, write the enemy's name in it. Dissolve the image in vinegar with nutmeg, amber, sukk, and storax gum. Use this to bind a person's will or to protect from harmful animals.

6· In Leo (Vision): Go to an uninhabited place. Place seven censers in a circle. Between each, place a goose egg with figures on it. Hold a tin needle. Dress in yellow wool. Decapitate a cock with a cut crest. Burn its pieces in the censers and drip its blood on the eggs and censers. Take an egg, pierce it with the needle, and say "hendeb hendeb" fifteen times. A man will appear.

7· In Virgo (Treasure): For thirty days, eat one thrush a day after suffumigating it with saffron. Abstain from wine. Wash in an east-flowing spring. Put a pound of spring water in a container, seal it with wax. Go to an open place, burn incense and saffron, and say the Moon's prayer. Bury the container with the opening facing south. Inscribe your wish on lead with a gold needle and bury it on top.

Place nine silver censers with aloewood, storax gum, and incense. Dress in white. Use two earthenware censers filled with water. Pour water from one to the other over your ribs. Burn the sacrifice. Prostrate four times saying "seraphie seraphie." A man will appear.

10· In Sagittarius (Treasure): Pour 10 lbs. of tin to make five dragons. Divert river water through five channels, placing a dragon in each. Let the water flow through them into jugs for an hour. Move the jugs away and return them for another hour. Fill the jugs. Pierce them with a needle. Dig a trench. Carry the water to the trench, spit some of it on the jugs and dragons. Burn amber and aloewood in silver censers. Bury the dragons. Decapitate your sacrifice in front of fifteen trees, saying "harmum harmum" five times for each tree. A man will appear and lead you to treasure.

The Key Principles: A Final Summary

1To conclude this comprehensive treatise, the sage must remember the following immutable laws:

21. The Law of Similitude: The celestial is reflected in the terrestrial. A talisman's power comes from aligning its materials, form, and timing with the planetary influence you seek to attract. Similarity creates a conduit; dissimilarity creates a barrier.

32. The Power of Belief: Firm, unwavering faith is the engine of all magical works. Doubt is the greatest enemy of the magician, for it severs the connection between the human will and the celestial powers. The work is not a test; it is an act of creation, born of absolute certainty.

43. The Foundation of Astrology: Without a profound knowledge of the stars and their motions, magic is impossible. The positions of the planets, the phases of the Moon, the aspects they form, and the mansions they occupy are the grammar and syntax of the celestial language.

54. The Moon as Mediatrix: The Moon is the primary channel for all planetary influences. Her waxing and waning, her position in the signs, and her aspects govern the success of every operation. In good works, she must be free from affliction; in evil works, she must be afflicted.

65. Secrecy as Protection: The knowledge contained in this book is dangerous. It must be guarded from the foolish and the profane, for in the wrong hands, it can bring ruin to the world. The sage reveals these secrets only to those who are worthy and prepared.

76. Purity of Purpose: Magic is the natural outcome of a righteous and philosophical life. The true magician acts in service of God and for the good of creation. To use these powers for selfish or malevolent ends is to invite destruction, both spiritual and physical.

8This is the complete and comprehensive knowledge of the Picatrix—the celestial wisdom of the ancients, a guide for the sage who seeks to understand the hidden forces of the cosmos and to align his will with the divine order of the universe.
